A.R.Rahman, the most popular music composer of India, walks home with two Oscar wins for “Slumdog Millionaire”. This is the honor that Rahman has received in his entire career. His enticing music has taken him from provincial Indian cinema to the Hollywood red carpet.
Rahman, the 43 year old musician, was once referred as ‘the Mozart of Madras’. He is the 3rd Indian to win an Oscar and the 1st to win two consecutive Academy Awards in the same year. Versatile soundtrack fusing hip-hop and throbbing electronica, haunting ballads, instrumentals and upbeat Bollywood numbers made the music of Slumdog popular across borders.
The Indian music maestro received Oscar for Best Original Score and Best Original Song – both for the song “Jai Ho”. The composer was imperceptible and overwhelmed and gave parts of his speech in Hindi as well as Tamil on receiving the golden statue. “There is a dialogue from an old Hindi film”, the composer continued, “’Mere paas ma hai’, which means I have nothing but a mother. My mother is here, I have her blessings. I am glad she could be here,” said Rahman. He ended the acceptance speech by saying “God is great” in Tamil, something he says after winning every award.
